I’m not a fan of zombie movies but I wanted to go into this one with an open mind. Of course the image of thousands of zombies piling on top of each other to get over a wall a few hundred metres tall was definitely appealing and boy that was quite a sight.
On the serious note, what makes World War Z worth the watch? Is it all just because Brad Pitt is in it? Let’s find out.
The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop a pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.
I’ve never read the book and to be honest, I didn’t watch a single trailer going into this film. I sort of wanted to be surprised because I’m not a huge fan of zombie movies and in some ways I asked myself, why bother with such a film?
Well I’ll start off by saying that I’m sure hard core zombie fans will feel that there have been many other films done better than this one, perhaps with even lesser of a budget. I found that it was one of those films that was straight to the point, the zombies are attacking, infecting and we really have no idea why. All that you need to know is that what’s left of civilization is running scared.
The story that develops along the way is actually quite surprising. I’m not gonna give too much away but I liked how it ended….something that isn’t your typical zombie movie ending nor is there any presence of some kind of a super soldier who will kill all the zombies.
I felt that Brad Pitt’s character was very well played and the scale of the movie was such that it showed a huge world, loads of CGI but then quickly refocused back to Brad Pitt’s character piece. The pace of the movie is also very good which is something that a lot of movies don’t have these days.
Verdict: 3 out of 5 Stars
It’s a very watchable piece thanks to Brad Pitt of course, not super scary but there is enough of an element of suspense for the occasional cheap thrills. A character piece, not a horror movie.
World War Z opens in cinemas 20 June 2013
