2011 was a great year for console gamers with many highly anticipated releases in almost every genre. From the top game on every RPG fan’s wishlist Skyrim to the graphically stunning Battlefield 3, Console gamers held lots to cheer about. POPCulture Online’s Chen Kangyi looks back at 2011 and also shares what his top 10 games of 2011 were.
10. Mortal Kombat 9
Now I’m a sucker for fighting games and MK9 delivered, with a simple pickup and play fighting mechanic to ease new players into the fray while still retaining the same bone crunching moves of the old Mortal Kombat.
9. LA Noire
This game is one of my most beloved titles of this year not only because of its great story but with excellent character design. There is no white knight in this story, no Bastion of Good, only humans with their own agenda. The main character Cole is only human and the excellent writing actually shows it.
8. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
The inclusion of 4 new characters brought the entire roster to a jaw-dropping 39, better online replay functionality such as the “Elite Channel” and various balance changes. SIGN ME UP !
7. Saints Row The Third
This side splitting open world game might not be my game of the year but it’s definitely THE funniest game of 2011. No pop culture trend is spared from ridiculous parodies, from a vampire hunting teen heart throb to the Hollywood-esque heist. Throw in a Pimp who only speaks through Auto-tune and you’ve got yourself one hell of a game.
6. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
Even with the legal tussle with the former heads of Infinity Wards and the exodus of nearly half the studio. The 3rd and concluding chapter of the Modern Warfare series does not disappoint, it’s by far THE best in the Modern Warfare series. With the multiplayer perfected to a shine and single player campaign is definitely one of the most satisfying in the entire series.
5. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Nathan Drake returns in the 3rd installment of the Uncharted series, his latest tale has him searching for the legendary Iram of the Pillars. The gameplay is has been polished to shine, from cinematic set pieces to excellent voice acting this game absolutely delivers.
4. Gears of War 3
Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad’s last mission to save the human race can be summed up in 1 word, closure; amid the giant glowing Lambert and a showdown with the Locust Queen herself, the gears found time to confront old demons. By the end of the campaign, all loose ends would be tied up. The multiplayer is also top notch, the inclusion of horde mode added much need variety to the multiplayer.
3. Yakuza 4
Simply one of the best crime drama available on the PS3, breaking the original mold and letting you take control of 3 new characters while still retaining series veteran Kiryu Kazuma. Brilliant voice acting coupled with an excellent story certainly made this game one of my favourite this year
2. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
A sprawling world, a seamless skill system and dragons. What more can I ask for, the world of Skyrim is littered with side quests and dungeons. I’ve already sunk 60 hours into the game and barely scratched the surface.
The tried and tested formula of Battlefield 3 has met competition before but this year, they go head to head with current reigning champion of modern warfare, MW3. The multiplayer is here is top notch, with 64 player conquest mode and team deathmatch being the most popular game modes on the PC servers. This game is my GAME OF THE YEAR.
