Now You See Me Review

I love a good caper movie, even better if there’s a twist at the end! Well this summer’s heist movie does provide a bit of everything provided you have an active imagination. Some critics are even calling it “more fun than Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13”. Really?…..Let’s find out.

The Plot

Now You See Me pits an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse against “The Four Horsemen”, a super-team of the world’s greatest illusionists. “The Four Horsemen” pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law.

The Verdict

If you love caper movies then this film might just be up your alley. Though it’s not quite in the same league as Ocean’s 11, it does have a sense of freshness to it! I like how they’ve used the phrase “the closer you look, the less you’ll see” and that plays out quite heavily during the film.

While there a plot holes in this film, there is an effort to make things interesting by including the element of magic which of course we all know is not real. It was all about pulling off the perfect illusion and I must say that with a few plot twists that they included, they had the audience pretty fooled for a while.

The casting on this film is excellent as well. You’ve got Jessie Eisenberg from the Social Network along side Dave Franco (James Franco’s younger brother) together with Woody Harrelson, one of my favorite actors and of course the lovely Isla Fisher. These 4 share the screen time very equally and they don’t try to outdo each other, it’s a good balance though I do think more could have been done to show their chemistry.

Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman have very significant roles as well and you can never fault their acting but for me the standout performer again has to be Mark Ruffalo who plays the FBI agent hunting the Four Horsemen. Just like he did with the Hulk in The Avengers, Ruffalo brings a certain conviction to the characters he plays. There’s a bit of humor, a bit of self pity and a bit of desperation to prove himself.

This film plays on the idea of magicians being able to right the wrongs of society and I found it very appealing because let’s face it, magic is probably the only way it could ever happen right?Having said that and having talked about the fun caper movie that this is, I would still advise you to check your brains at the door…..ok maybe bring half your brain in, you might need to put two and two together at the end after all.

Rating : 3.5 out of 5 stars

If you don’t want to watch this for the plot then at least watch it for the actors because they are quite brilliant
