POPCulture Online visits SOYC

Ask any cosplayer what is the first major cosplay event of the year to look forward to and the answer is a three letter word. While most newcomers would be scratching their heads, the seasoned ones would immediately smile.

In its 3rd year running, SOY or Start Of Year is THE COSPLAY EVENT to lookout for to get the cosplayer's year going. With a denotation of 'C' this year (last year was B if you get the drift), SOYC looks to be even bigger and better as compared to the previous year. From a bigger (and yes I do mean bigger) venue to lots more sponsors and even a band competition which is the first time ever, SOYC looks to dwarf its predecessors which shows how much SOY has grown.

While the event officially starts at 11am for the public, you can see eager visitors and cosplayers outside the venue getting their tickets or waiting for the doors to open as early as 10am. Everyone seems to be a in good mood even though the venue, Nee Ann Polytechnic was in the west and the journey can take as long as an hour or more if you stay in other parts of Singapore.

Inside the venue, booth owners prepare their booths to showcase and sell their wares. These range from stickers, badges and even posters from anime or manga series which can either be fan-art or official. Another set of merchandise to pick up are photos of cosplayers. These come in different sizes and you can even get the cosplayers to sign the photos that you just bought.

And of course as we have mentioned in a previous post, the owners two charity booths for the nation of Japan which was hit with a massive earthquake and a tsunami were busy getting their booths ready.

Another interesting booth that was present is the one by Samsung who is one of the sponsors for this year's SOY. A booth was up for visitors to feel and touch the latest range of Samsung cameras ranging from their latest DSLR to the compacts. There was also a photography competition and a free photo booth as well.

Not forgetting a trend that has been very popular over the recent years is the anime inspired trading card games. With a 2 tournaments going on at SOYC, eager participants could test their deck out to see how well they fare. And for first timers, you can get a lesson on how to play and even pick up a deck or two to booster your current one.
