December is the month is that most if not everyone (unless you work in the retail sector like me) look forward to every year. From having the excuse to clear all those left over leave, plan that long deserved holiday and justify the need to eat delicious goodies, it is also a good time to pay a visit to the cinema.
After all, as work slows down and you find yourself wanting to hang out with friends whom you missed thanks to the busy work year, what better way than to go catch a movie together.
Here at POPCulture Online, the team is also planning which movie to catch and we thought that we try to score a few more points with Santa by suggesting 5 movies (in no particular order) to catch this holiday season.
Ask any gamer who his or her favourite character is and high chance most if not all will name you one of the good guys. While the bad guys can be memorable, it is very rare that these characters will be looked up to.
Well this stereotype is about change thanks to the latest Disney animated movie which explored the idea that those pixel characters you see behind the screen actually have feelings. And when one of these characters decide that he has enough of being the bad guy and wants to be the hero everyone loves, you can be sure an adventure of pixel sized proportion is waiting for you.
Wreck-It Ralph is set to open in cinemas December 20th.
Rise of the Guardians
To most if not all of us, the idea we have of Santa Clause is this cheery old grandfather like guy with rosy cheeks and a belly that gives out presents to every child on the 25th of December. But what if I told you that Santa is actually part of a group of Guardians that fight evil to protect the world from Darkness?
Enter Dreamworks Animation’s version of Willam Joyce’s The Guardians of Childhood. From The Easter Bunny to The Sandman, watch these childhood myths and legends become a fight force that might give superheroes of today a good run for their money. Add in a stellar cast of Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Isla Fisher and Dakota Goyo, Rise of the Guardians is one movie that should not be missed.
Rise of the Guardians is now showing in cinemas.
If there is one man who have defined a action movie genre into his own, it has to be Kung fu superstar Jackie Chan. Blending in lots of action, movies and his own brand of humor Jackie Chan has wowed fans over and over with his movies.
Also known as “Armour Of God III: Chinese Zodiac”, CZ12 is the sequel to “Armour Of God” and “Armour Of God II: Operation Condor”, where Jackie Chan stars as a Chinese hero named Asian Hawk. The movie will also be Jackie Chan’s last action movie as announced by the veteran actor who is now 58.
Taking a year and a half to make with a script that took 7 years to write, you can be sure that Jackie Chan will want to end his action movie days with a bang. And looking at the trailer, it seems like a potentially big one too.
CZ12 is set to open in cinemas December 20th.
Set in France during the 19th century, Les Misérables is about to bring to movie goers the magic that made the musical of the same name the world’s longest running one.
With a star studded cast of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe & Anne Hathaway, Les Misérables tells the story of broken dreams, unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption- a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit.
Directed by Tom Hooper of The King’s Speech fame, this is one movie that musical lovers both on the big screen and on stage shouldn’t miss.
Les Misérables is set to open in cinemas December 25th.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
A movie whose hype has grown beyond measurement, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is perhaps on every fantasy fan’s top movie list to watch this holiday season.
From the same people who brought the legendary Lord of the Rings series to the big screen, the prequel of a movie tells the story of Biblo Baggins, uncle to Frodo Baggins (from the Lord of the Rings series), as he sets off on his first adventure that will take him into the contact with a ring that will forever change his life and middle earth.
From the various video clips online and the trailer itself, you can be sure that all the magic of middle earth that won fans over in Lord of the Rings will be back again. Plus with Peter Jackson once again at the helm, this is one movie that should be on everyone’s list.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to open in cinemas December 13th.
