May’n in Singapore

This month we pay tribute to a Japanese Pop Artiste who started her career at the age of 13. Now at 22, she manages to perform at sell out concerts all over the region. She's been a guest of honour at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles, performed in all 3 installments of Anime Festival Asia and now she's back in Singapore for her very first solo concert as well as the gala premiere of her movie – PhonicNation at Screen Singapore.

We caught up with this warm, down to earth star and had a chat about her new movie, lessons in life and her message to aspiring artistes.

PCO: Do tell us about your new movie – PhonicNation and what you hope audiences will get out of it?

May'n: Well I've always positioned my 'live' tours as the most essential part of me being an artiste. With this movie, i want to spread the 'live' expereince to more audiences and it's visually more interesting because it's in 3D.

This movie consists of 2 parts, the first part being the 'live' performance experience  and the second being the documentary aspects. You will notice that there are a lot of messages from me in the movie which is meant to unite the world through music and I do the hope the audiences will be able to feel that through my music.

PCO: What's the most important lesson you have learnt about being an artiste and how has that shaped you to become the woman you are today?

May'n: I've got mixed feelings actually. When I'm singing and performing on stage, I'm portraying that character in the song, It's a moment in that character that i feel very strongly and passionate for and it plays a very big part of me as an artiste.

As a person off stage, I'm very encouraged by comments from my fans and honestly I can't live without it. So these are 2 very different characters and sides of me that come out at seperate times, yet at the same time these 2 characters can't live without each other.

PCO: You have 3 full studio albums and 2 EPs, which is your favorite album in terms of personal meaning?

May'n: Well that would have to be my first album simply because it's the first one so it's memorable in that meaning. However interacting with fans all the time brings me new inspiration to create and write new music so every new album has new personal meaning for me.

PCO: What are your plans for the rest of 2011?

May'n: Well I'm finishing up the final stage of my Asian tour right now and I've also released my new single, Scarlet Ballet in Japan. After this I'll be heading up to Paris for the Japan Expo and then it's back in Japan for another tour. So it's more performing for me for the rest of the year.

PCO: You started your career at the age of 13 and you've come a long way. Do you have any advice for the younger generation who want to start careers in show biz?

May'n: Wow, you know before I started at the age of 13 there was a long story. I first had the thought of wanting to be a singer at the age of 3, I went for my first audition at the age of 9 but I didn't succeed.

After that it was 4 years of failed auditions and it was very tough for me because the opportunities were hard to come by. Finally I got a chance when i was 13 but even then it was still tough.

My message for the younger generation is never give up and the opportunity will eventually come. It's important not to lose passion in what you do and keep working hard.

PCO: Our last question is more of a fun question…

May'n: Haha, I'm looking forward to it..

PCO: We write a lot about superhero movies and we'd like to ask, if you could be a superhero with powers, what powers would you like to have?

May'n: Haha, hmm…..well I love to eat, especially in Japan and Singapore. But as an artiste i have to keep in shape so that means reducing my food intake and watching my diet.

So if I could have one super power, I'd like the power to eat as much as I want and not gain weight!

PCO: Haha I think you and just about all the women in the world would like that power. Thank you Super May'n and all the best for the concert at *scape!

May'n: Thank you very much!

May'n performs in her very first solo concert in SIngapore at *scape warehouse on Saturday 4 June. For ticketing info check out gatecrash.com.
