Organiser Eliphant held its Press Conference at the classy Pixel Studios to share with members of the media what to expect at the fourth edition of Southeast Asia’s Premier Game Convention, GameStart 2017. From an exciting lineup of games for visitors to play to interesting new content, it will be the celebration of gaming come together at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre on 14th and 15th October.
Hands on with the Latest Titles
If there is one thing that gaming conventions are popular for, it is the chance to hands on the latest titles that are still in development or just before launch day. GameStart 2017 will be no different with the Sony Playstation booth making an appearance again to give visitors a chance to try out the highly anticipated Gran Turismo Sport and also the recently released Fifa 2018. Namco Bandai will also be exhibiting at GameStart 2017 so you can be sure there will be lots to play this year.
The Founders Base, GameStart’s special indie area, will also be back for GameStart 2017. Showcasing games from both local and international content creators, visitors can check them out thanks to partnerships with other game events Taipei Game Show and Game Prime (Indonesia). DigiPen Game Studios will also be showcasing their latest game developed for the Nintendo Switch while BattleBrew Productions will also be showcasing their latest mobile game BattleSky Brigade. Just don’t be fooled by the cute little bunnies cos they carry weapons!
Conquer the Tabletops
GameStart 2017 will see the new GameStart TableTop area that will feature activities for both novices and veterans to tabletop gaming. Visitors can rent or bring their own games to play, compete in tabletop tournaments, win prize tickets, or check out booths to purchase their favourite games. Exhibitors include Wizards of the Coast, who will bring the latest content release for Magic: The Gathering, Grey Ogre Games who will be retailing games and also running a tournament for Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, and Gamersaurus Rex, who will bring Warhammer 40,000 to the event.
Eat, Drink and be Merry
For the first time at GameStart, the event will see an area dedicated to two things that any game developer can relate to – food and drinks, the alcohol kind. Yes those late nights of development work are usually accompanied with these and the usual celebration at the bar once it’s all done. Named The Drinkery, it will be a cyber themed lounge for attendees to refresh and recharge, featuring food stalls and a bar. The Drinkery is presented by Samsung, and offers visitors the convenience of ordering their food and beverages via Samsung Pay – its mobile payment service. Visitors will also get to try out the latest Samsung technology at the experience zone, including the Samsung Gear VR.
Just remember that our local laws still apply for the age limit for drinking and if you drink that day, please don’t drive.
What’s a gaming convention without eSports to add to the excrement and atmosphere? GameStart 2017 will see the return of the South East Asia Major and the introduction of the SEA Mobile Major plus new additions that are equally big in the scene. Visitors can expect lots of action with the Asia Regional Finals for Capcom Pro Tour 2017 (Street Fighter V), Asia Regionals for Tekken World Tour 2017 (Tekken 7) and one of only six Marvel vs Capcom Infinite ”Battle of the Stones” special tournaments in the world to happening at GameStart 2017.
Mobile Game fans can also catch the the 1st official Shadowverse tournament in Southeast Asia – the Shadowverse SEA Open. With a prize pool of USD 5,000 and a free trip to watch the RAGE Shadowverse World Grand Prix in Japan in December, you know the competition will be hot.
Other tournaments announced include the annual GameStart FIFA 18 Tournament, which returns on October 14-15. Organised by BEast of the East and [OoE]Xtr3me3, the tournament is presented by PlayStation. The champion stands to win $1,000, a brand new PS4 console and HyperX headphones. Fans of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) can also look forward to the GameStart 2017’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Tournament, held in partnership with the PUBG Singapore community.
Race the Chairs
One of the things at least year’s GameStart returns this year and it is too epic not to mention – Yes, the Secretlab Race is back again! Not much details have been released yet about the race course or any new competition settings but if it is anything like last year, we encourage everyone to at least stop by the area to check it out.
Shop till you drop
GameStart 2017 will see the return of Doujin Market where creators will get to showcase their work for you to purchase. Doubling in size this year with the good people at Neo Tokyo Project handling it, you can be sure to find something nice to bring home.
Other exhibitors include Freshly Pressed Socks, Armaggeddon and Xmashed Gear also means your wallet is never going to be safe once you enter the GameStart 2017 event halls.
