Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning – Teeth of Naros Review

It’s not all too long ago that Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning gamers had their first taste of its first DLC from 38 Studios and Big Huge Games, The Legend of Dead Kel. The DLC opened up a big new area for exploration and questing with a storyline and characters that were in some sense cliche but still very acceptable for a DLC standard.

With a fairly successful first DLC, 38 Studios and Big Huge Games have gone on to work on a 2nd DLC with a rather interesting storyline. The talk of riches for those who dare to explore, a mighty floating city with inhabitants the size of giants and a destiny that only the fateless one can unlock. Enter the Teeth of Naros, the 2nd DLC to the highly successful Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

The first thing you will notice as you enter the new area called the Teeth of Naros is that everything looks taken out of a page in a Greek mythology inspired novel. From the stone looking Kollossae that are the main race you interact with to the architecture of the floating city of Idylla, I did wonder for a bit if the designers were secretly fans of an rpg of old, Titan’s Quest.

Even the storyline feels like an inspired short story of a minor hero from Greek mythology and seasoned gamers will have no issues figuring out the twist which happened later on. While its your standard rpg story twist, the whole background setting of the DLC did actually make it enjoyable especially after giving the boss a good transparent spear in the face.

The DLC is not a long one with it possible to clear the main quest line in about one afternoon of gaming for mid level fateless ones. While there is technically no level requirement for Teeth of Naros (unlike The Legend of Dead Kel), I would still recommend you hit a decent level with some sort of AOE attack before venturing into the Teeth of Naros.

Overall the DLC can be completed in about a weekend of casual gaming and does provide a good break from the main Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning quest line for those halfway through. A new form of damage called primal magic makes things a little more interesting and the final reward itemset does look nice if you are into olden greek designs.

The only disappointment is that no level cap was included in this expansion. I also felt the main quest line could be one or two steps longer as there was still a bit more that could be done with the background setting.

Nevertheless the DLC is still an enjoyable one and would make a nice addition for gamers looking to add something new to their Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning experience.
