Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Reviewed

Who’s up for a 3D movie? I know what you’re thinking. Everything’s in 3D these days but not all of the 3D post production is done well.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was a movie i took a chance on. I was very sure there wasn’t going to be much of a plot to it but one that worried me was the 3D.

Well proved me wrong because in the end I was probably the only guy scream in the cinema thanks to a giant millipede.

The Plot

In this follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit Journey to the Center of the Earth, the new 3D family adventure Journey 2: The Mysterious Island begins when young Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first film) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. It’s a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret.

Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

The Verdict

This is a very likeable film. There’s not much in the plot, which doesn’t take a genius to figure out but they’ve basically combined the ideas of books like The Mysterious Island, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and The Lost City of Atlantis. The big animals became small and the tiny insects become huge.

Now for starters I’d recommend you watch this on an IMAX 3D screen because the 3D effects are very good, way way way better that the first movie Journey to The Center of The Earth. In fact there were times I screamed in shock because of giant millipedes, bees and spiders. It’s totally gross when it’s so near your face. Give me 3D monsters, zombies or dragons and I laugh in the face of it’s scariness but not giant insects. Yucks it makes my hair stand just writing about it.

The acting is not much to rave about. Dwayne Johnson is his usual campy self but in moderation. New comer Josh Hutcherson does a pretty decent job as well. Vanessa Hudgens is average and Michael Caine can’t do anything wrong in this film. The main source of laughs however came from Luiz Guzman who was hilarious during the film with his cowardly ways and you could relate that he really wanted to be a better father to Vanessa Hudgens’ character. Oh and there was Dwayne and his pecks too….that was a pretty funny touch.

Over all you should give this film a try for 2 reasons.

1. Because there really is some nice scenery in the film and it’s littered with the right amount of laughs.

2. Because in 3D the movie is like one of those theme park rides where you scare yourself silly. It you scare easily then maybe watch it in 2D.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Stars

By the way, Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock teaches you the 3 things you need to master to get a girl….pay to attention to him at your own risk.
