Having won a prize for his portrayal of Date Masamune from Sengoku Basara at SMASH! 2012 as part of Team Sexy Beast, Dat-Baka has amassed a sizable following in the short four years since his debut. No qualms about showing off his toned abs and muscles that make fangirls go crazy, Dat-Baka is also one really fun guy to hang out with and very down to earth even with all this.
Kenneth Wong talks to this cool dude about his plushie, his secret to his fitness and his experiences here in Singapore.
Everyone has a story on how they got started with cosplay, what was yours?
I was never one to talk much to people and one of my friends realised I like anime and took me to a convention thinking I might enjoy this. So I decided to gave it a try and saw people there were dressing up as characters that they liked. I found this really admirable because they were expressing their interest and fandoms. I decided to give it a try as well and dress up as a character I liked. So for the next event I went to, I dressed up as something I liked and that was how I started with cosplay.
I am sure you have many fans all over, so how are the fans here in Singapore for you and what was the craziest thing a fan ever did for you?
Someone made this plushie for me and I find it very cute just like the fans in Singapore. So far I have not had the experience where a fan did a crazy thing for me but I did have this crazy experience where someone stuck a hand into my pants. I went like woah… I don’t even know who you are. That would be the craziest thing I can think of.
If there is one cosplayer you would like to cosplay with, who would that be and why?
I would like to cosplay with the Japanese Cosplayer Kaname because he is my cosplay idol and the one I really look up to when I first started cosplaying. It would be very cool to get to meet him and cosplay with him.
Any particular series to cosplay with Kaname?
Something Bara or Manly I guess. Maybe Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure or Kuroko no Basket.
Can you describe the qualities that your ideal life partner must have?
She would be the tsundere type that secretly cares, or like in the romantic animes where the girls are all perfect to me. She would be shorter then me as well and of course cute. In fact the shorter the better so that I can like squish her.
You have been in Singapore for quite a while and have sampled the many food types Singapore has to offer. So have you tried the “king” of fruits… the durian?
I have tried it and I like it. The only thing is that after eating durian, when it was time for bed and I tried to go to sleep, I could smell something and wondered what was that. Then it hit me that it was the durian that I had earlier.
What was the mos embarrassing incident that happened during your trip to Singapore for ICDS 2014?
On the flight here, I was talking to the guy next to me and at one point everyone fell asleep and as I was sleeping I woke up due to his snoring and got really scared not knowing why. Then I started farting and wondered if anyone knew about it. For me that was pretty embarrassing.
Is there a special secret or workout routine that you have to keep in such great shape?
Be careful with what you eat especially if you are in Singapore (laughter in the room). To begin with, diet is the most important and containing how much you eat (especially here in Singapore) and exercise will come naturally along with it.
Do you have a message for your fans?
I really appreciate everything and its very overwhelming as I never really expect to have people to be interested in what I am doing. It has been really nice and I am thankful for this.
Thank you Dat-Baka for your time and we hope to see you back in Singapore in the future.
