With GameStart 2018 happening in less than two weeks’ time, the good people behind Southeast Asia’s Premier Game Convention Eliphant held a media conference to share what’s in store for visitors at the 5th edition of the event. If you are still considering if you should make the trip down, here are 5 reasons (in no particular order) why GameStart 2018 is the event to be at next weekend.
Buy Buy Buy
Welcome to the danger zone for your wallet as GameStart 2018 will see lots of cool merchandise for visitors to pick up. Xmashed Gear is back again with cool tee shirt designs and we hear that their latest Monster Hunter inspired ones are selling well. Doujin Market returns as well with lots of local and overseas artist taking part this year and it is highly encouraged to arm yourself with hard cold cash if you decide to venture into this poisonous zone.
The limited edition GameStart x Armaggeddon gaming mouse will also be on sale and from initial testing, that mouse is proving to be good value for its price as with all other Armaggeddon products. So if you are looking to get your first gaming grade gear without breaking the bank, head over to check their booth out.
Bring on the Esports
Before all the hype of Esports in our rather conservative side of the world, there was the good people at BEast of the East organising community driven tournaments. A successful product of the team’s hard work is the SEA Major and it is back for GameStart 2018 after successful runs at previous GameStarts.
SEA Major 2018 will play host to tournaments for 10 games with a prize pool of USD 50,000 up for grabs. The tournament will see more than 200 international competitors in Singapore for the weekend, including top professional esports athletes from Japan, America and Europe.
We highly encourage everyone visiting GameStart 2018 to check out their booth as you can not only expect lots of excitement during the matches but also high levels of energy that comes with community driven events.
Big Names Incoming
GameStart 2018 continues the trend of gaming heavyweights with Motohiro Okubo, Producer of hotly-anticipated game SOULCALIBUR VI, Kaname Fujioka (Executive Director/Art Director) and Yuya Tokuda (Director) of the highly popular MONSTER HUNTER: WORLD™ and Elise Zhang, voice actress for Mei from Overwatch, will be at the event to meet with fans.
As a special treat, Celebrity gamer and New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega will be at GameStart 2018. In addition to being a commentator at Sea Major 2018, The wrestling star will also hold a Meet & Greet session as well.
Battle on the Tabletop
GameStart Tabletop returns for another round with even more space for everyone to play. Fight battles with the popular Warhammer series or immerse yourselves in a fantasy realm with Dungeons & Dragons. If these are a little too heavy for you, board games will be available too so leave your digital gadgets and return to the physical.
Do be warned that if you end up getting hooked onto these games and leave the digital realm behind, we are not responsible for pointing you in that direction. Just ask our webmaster who has thousands of points worth of Warhammer Fantasy and 40K somewhere in his cupboard.
It’s All About Games
What’s a gaming event without the latest games and GameStart 2018 will see lots of cool titles for visitors to try out. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will be showcasing their latest title, Lego DC Super-Villains, where you play the role of a rookie villain under the tutelage of DC biggest villains such as the Lex Luthor. Pre-Order the game at GameStart 2018 and you get a limited edition figurine from the game.
Homegrown game studio BattleBrew Productions’ latest mobile creation Battlesky Brigade: Taptap will also be at GameStart 2018 while MyRepublic will be setting up shop with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Japanese game studio PONOS will also be bringing their Battle Cats over so just remember to be civil when waiting for your turn as wrestling and mixed martial arts are for the professionals.
Sources close to the event also shared that since Kaname Fujioka and Yuya Tokuda from Monster Hunter World will be at the event, there will be a booth for the game as well. Not sure how it will be but definitely something to check out for fans.
Food Glorious Food
Special mention to the food section that will be at GameStart 2018. Now called the Sanctuary, the dining area is the place to be when you need to unwin, chill and grab a bite/drink from a selection of vendors. Last year saw health and mana potion themed drinks to go with gaming character inspired dishes.
While not much has been presented at the media conference, we can guess that this year will continue to be happening. Thus if you ever wonder what members of the POPCulture Online team will be doing during our downtime (or maybe most of the time), high chance we will be at the Sanctuary chilling cos food and drinks is always good.
