An exciting day for computer and video gaming fans here in this side of the world as gamescom comes to Singapore for its Asian debut as gamescom asia from 15 to 18 October. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and gamescom organiser Koelnmesse today to mark a new partnership for the event at IMDA’s Pixel.
gamescom is one of the biggest computer and video games convention in the industry and is held in Gemany. Jointly organized by Koelnmese and game – the German Games Industry Association, hundreds of thousands of visitors, both fans and from the industry attend the convention every year. To have them come to this side of the world is indeed exciting news for fans here.
While Mathias Kupper, Managing Director of Koelnmesse Singapore, did not have much details to share yet as it is still early in the planning stage, he was optimistic about growing gamescom asia from the initial projected number of 30,000 attendees in its first year. With this side of the world hungry for a tier 1 gaming event, he is positive that the numbers will also grow just like with gamescom itself from its early days.
Yet for those who are worried about the fate of GameStart Asia which usually occupy the October slot, there is no cause for worry as Mathias also shared that it will be a partnership with the good people behind GameStart Asia. While it is still early to pass judgement on how this will turn out, having a tier 1 event and the experience from the GameStart team come together is very promising.
The question on most fans mind would probably be what about GameStart 2019 which looks to be the last edition of GameStart Asia in Singapore before gamescom asia 2020 takes over. For this, Elicia Lee, Founder of GameStart and gaming marketing firm Eliphant, shared:
This year’s GameStart will be held on 12 and 13 October 2019, with a theme on Asian Mythology. In addition to showcasing the latest games and exclusives, SEA Major will be hosted at the event once again. We are also planning an industry segment to facilitate knowledge sharing for companies who are keen to engage the gaming community. The team is hard at work developing something special for our fans as well, so stay tuned. We hope that everyone can come and join us this October!
So let’s continue to give Elicia and her team all the support for this year’s GameStart before they they hand over the baton to gamescom asia.
