When news broke out that we will be having our own version of one of the biggest video games event in the world with gamescom asia, I believe I wasn’t the only one that screamed for joy internally. Yes while it was sad that it also meant that GameStart Asia would take a step back for gamescom asia, but at least the people behind GameStart would still be involved in it.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 happened and the gamescom asia didn’t happen in 2020. Thankfully with technology and advances in covid-19 self-testing kits, gamescom asia returned in 2021 in a hybrid mode where trade days were opened physically, and the consumer side of the event was held virtually.
The consumer side of the event was broadcasted over the 15th to 17th October weekend where different programs were broadcasted live via Youtube. From gaming news to streamer challenges and fireside chats and sneak peaks, the variety was what one would have expected from a physical event, minus the being there in person. An advantage of being on Youtube versus a physical event is that you can watch it even if you missed the time slot. Something I am thankful for as I also had other commitments during this period.
It was also good to see gamescom asia cater to Asian audiences with the streams in English, Thai, and Bahasa Indonesia. Even the streamer challenges where from the region so that really brought out the asia in gamescom asia. Singapore Games Association (SGGA)’s Asia Games Awards was also part of the program which added that nice local flavor touch.
The Singapore Games Association (SGGA), the primary trade association for gaming and esports in Singapore, also had a hybrid Singapore Pavilion at gamescom asia. The Singapore Pavilion featured exhibitors from Singapore-based gaming and esports startups and SMEs. A central attraction was its Virtual Village, the main exhibition space for Singapore Games Week, a festival held in conjunction with gamescom asia.
Overall while gamescom asia didn’t meet the hype expectation generated when it was first announced gamescom was coming to asia, organisers koelnmesse did what they could considering the current covid-19 situation and definit gave us something to whet our appetites.
This video games fan is definitely looking forward to when gamescom asia will be a full physical event again.
