It’s been just over 3 years since the first film which was fun, brainless and had a very hot Rachel Nichols. Well she’s been replaced by the hotter and taller Adrianne Palicki, the ninjas are back and General Hawk makes way for John McClane….I mean Bruce Willis. Need Muscle? We have that too…would The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment be enough?…should would. So, the ingredients seem to be good but is it enough to retaliate against the campiness of the first movie? Let’s find out.
In this sequel to G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson. Directed by Jon M. Chu, and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner, from a screenplay by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe characters.
This movie was delayed for almost a year for the sake of post production 3D. Obviously targeted at making more money seeing as how The Avengers managed to break all box office records. Well I’d say for a start, you really don’t need to watch this in 3D to enjoy it. Next, leave your brains at the door….seriously, this movie should probably have a “Fans Only” sign at the door because it ain’t no “Dark Knight Rises” I tell you but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun.
We’ve got some great characters in the form on the charismatic Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock….trust me, just look at this man smile, he’s got a great on screen presence. Adrianne Palicki brings that much needed babe factor and observe when you watch the film, especially when she stands next to Dwayne Johnson, man she is tall! There’s a scene where she’s in short shorts running and boy does she have legs!
Ok I digress, ladies will have plenty to look at with DJ Cotrona and his Ryan Seacrest boyish charm although I must say he doesn’t really have on screen presence. A man with a lot of on screen presence however is Korean heart throb Lee Byung-Hun! This guy is damn cool and his abs were the drool factor of every woman in the cinema. I even showed a topless photo of him to a colleague of mine and her tongue stuck out without realizing. For the guys, this actor is 42 years old so if you don’t have abs like him, shame on you! LOL!
Ok back to the movie. It’s got a basic revenge plotline that is predictable naturally but I think one of the things that director Jon M. Chu tries to do is to bring out the ninja elements of the franchise. This movie also works as a good middle movie of a trilogy where back stories are introduced, different focus of other characters and it is definitely superior to it’s predecessor. I thought the first movie was fun though and I enjoyed it like a kid would but this serious tone is needed for the franchise but don’t be mistaken, this movie is in no way a grittier version, just a smart step away from the campier one.
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson have really good chemistry in this film and I for one would have loved to see more of it. Thankfully Bruce Willis steps in to fill the void.
