Easily one of the best game for 2017, the action role-playing game Nier: Automata has not only captivated gamers with its storyline but also a fascination with the main character 2B/YoRHa No.2 Type B. Behind this masterpiece are Director Yoko Taro and Producer Saitou Yosuke who were in town for the recent GameStart 2017. POPCulture Online’s Tessie Tan and Kenneth Wong speaks to the duo about their artistic vision of the game and what will motivate them to create the sequel.
Artistic vision of the game
Yoko-san explained that his aim was not to create a world that others would accept, but to create one that he himself would like to be in. He gets his inspirations for his characters from friends who see themselves as outcasts. Yoko-san sees that everybody is a little strange in their own way, and he wants to present this strangeness in the world of Nier: Automata. As to whether or not the story is meant to be hopeful despite its dark atmosphere, Yoko-san clarified that it was not his intent to influence how the players interpret the game, though he is happy that his players see hope. Yoko-san feels that his job as a director is just to paint the backdrop and allow the players to explore.
The producer and director are more alike than we thought.
Yoko-san explained that it was easy to work with Saitou-san as they are both similar. They both like to withdraw from others, hates interviews, and loves money. Saitou-san confirmed that Yoko-san will work with anyone as long as they give him enough money.
How the voice actor for 9S was chosen.
Saitou-san explained that the role of 9S is a special one. He is neither an adult, nor a child. Male voice actors often have too low a range to portray a child convincingly, while female voice actors often make a boy child sound too feminine. Initially, the producer himself was not sure what sort of a voice he was looking for either. The only thing he was sure about is that 9S must be able to scream.
It was then that he started watching the anime, Tokyo Ghoul. He was attracted to the voice of Kaneki Ken. When Kaneki started screaming, Saitou-san said to himself, “this is it.” And the rest is history.
What the producer and director are motivated by.
The critical question on many fans’ minds was if there will be a sequel to Nier: Automata. To that, Saitou-san and Yoko-san only laughed and said they would do anything for money.
Fans, you heard that.
