The region’s largest Japanese popular culture event, C3 Anime Festival Asia Singapore (C3AFASG) 2019, returns to bring 3 days of experiential content to event goers. Kenneth & Nicholas braved the rain and the crowd to fly with AFA Airways to check out the 12th edition of the event.
Spreading across level 4 of Suntec City Convention Centre, C3AFASG19 continues its trend with a comprehensive range of merchandise, content showcases, experience zones and the Akiba stage in its main event hall.
As expected based on previous year’s experiences, queues were already formed hours before opening time as many limited edition merchandise were on sale for fans and collectors. From anime figurines to artist merchandise, many wallets and bank accounts went on a slimming program that would rival Black Friday. The Creators Hub, a dedicated area with booths selling fan-made merchandise also returns to complete the slimming experience.
This writer also ended up eyeing the pre-orders for the iconic Sakura War mecha modles and it looks like someone in the team will be eating grass this year end.
With the rise of the escape rooms trend comes the Naruto x Boruto: Ninja Selection Exam by the people at Odex. Inspired by the famous ninja exam from the leaf village, participants have to prove themselves worthy to be Ninjas among the ranks of Naruto by answering various questions and clearing specially designed challenges.
One of the new zones added was the AFA Play zone, a dedicated space where event goers can enjoy games specially curated for Anime lovers. From relaxing on comfortable bean bags while playing console games to challenging guest on stage to specially selected games, the new space proved to be a good addition to the staple content.
C3AFASG has always delivered on the content front and this year is no different with big names such as BANDAI SPIRITS, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment, CYBIRD and Kotobukiya all present with their latest wares. From big booths with the latest console game to hands on to the latest figurines and models on display to tempt event goers to part with their year end bonus, these added to the festival atmosphere at C3AFASG19.
Renowned Japanese animation studio MAPPA also made its first visit abroad here at C3AFASG19 with a special showcase. At the MAPPA SHOWCASE, anime fans and aspiring animators got a chance to take a look at behind-the-scenes in developing hit anime series such as Yuri on Ice, Banana Fish, Dororo and Zombie Land Saga.
Another returning fan favourite, the Day Stage allows event goers to get first-hand account of what goes on behind-the-scenes from industry experts and voice actors/actresses (seiyuus). These include Asami Tano and Manabu Otsuka from the Zombie Land Saga series.
This year’s C3AFASG19 also saw a greater variety of food and drinks selections at the Matsuri-themed Food Street. From SUPER IPPUDO, Renga-ya, Sinful Cold Soba to Tiger Sugar, this year saw more than 10 stores feed the hungry event goers.
A common sight to every popular culture event here are the cosplayers, both local and from around the region. From the latest anime titles to popular video games, cosplayers can be posing for smartphones, compact cameras to expensive professional grade ones. As always, Suntec Level 3 can also been seen transformed with the many portable strobes and makeshift studio corners.
There is no denying that the Japanese popular culture continues to be an evergreen trend looking at the turn out at C3AFASG19. Even after 12 editions, C3 Anime Festival Asia Singapore is still going strong and there is little doubt that anything is going to derail this bullet train in the near future.
