The Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention (STGCC) is back again this weekend and it looks like organisers ReedPOP are ready once again to bring a good mix of Popular Culture to fans here in Singapore and those visiting from around the region. Kenneth and Tessie braved the showery morning to attend the media preview and shares their five reasons why you should attend STGCC 2018.
Build on with LEGO
STGCC 2018 will see the Danish toy bricks company LEGO join in the fun by bringing two of their latest masterpieces, Harry Potter and Voltron to the event. Fans will be able to be immersed in the Harry Potter universe by visiting the Hogwarts campus constructed entirely from LEGO bricks, get theirs hands on the 6,0000 LEGO bricks Hogwarts Castle and Harry Potter merchandise will be available onsite for purchase, including the Harry Potter brickheadz x Go Brick Me collections.
The five interactive Voltron-themed lion figurines from Voltron: Defender of the Universe that transform into robotic lions will also be unveiled at STGCC. As a special treat, designer Leandro Tayag making a special appearance at STGCC to sign Voltron merchandise for fans and there will be screenings as well of the popular series.
Enter the Spider
This is an exciting year for fans of the Spiderman universe with both the live action movie about the supervillain Venom and the animated flim Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse set to release this year. The two will be making an appearance at STGCC with both a dedicated booth to the anti-hero where fans can play with black slime and also one by Spiderverse SG, the Singapore chapter of the international fandom dedicated to the web slinging hero.
One main staple every year at STGCC are the many guest from the Comics industry and this year is no different. The event will see industry heavyweights such as David Finch who has contributed to notable Marvel and DC Comics titles, Adi Granov who works as an illustrator and designer primarily for Marvel, Agnes Garbowska who has worked on DC Super Hero Girls and My Little Pony, and many more give their insights during panels on stage and be at the Walk of Fame to sign autographs.
Our own National Library Board will also be at STGCC 2018 to showcase part of their enormous collection of comics, graphic novels and art-themed books. NLB will be bringing down titles from Spider-Man, Avengers and Black Panther so fans will not want to miss their booth.
If it is a popular culture event, you can be sure that the cosplay community will be around to showcase their costumes and add to the sights of the event. From detailed armour pieces to beautifully sew costumes, bring your cameras to capture all these down but remember to treat the cosplayers with respect as well. STGCC will also see cosplay guest such as AJO, Shiraga (小泱) grace the event with the Championships of Cosplay happening on the 2nd day so remember to camp early for a good viewing spot as it will be crowded.
Both Cosplayers and fans will also want to head down to the SINGER Experience Booth to try their hand at sewing their own superhero capes and take part in an Instagram competition with prizes sponsored by SINGER. Brand Ambassador Olivia Mears or AvantGeek as she is known to the community will also be around so fans will not want to miss the booth out.
Toys, Merchandise and Artwork
If there is one thing event goers will have to be careful of, it is spending too much money on toys as well, you can never have enough. This year will be no different as Simply Toys, Action City and XM Studios will be setting up shop to tempt you to part with your hard-earned cash in exchange for some of their offerings. Another regular to STGCC is tokidoki who will be selling their San Diego Comic Con exclusives such as the Sakura 10” statue and their tokidoki X Hello Kitty Series. Our experiences with tokidoki is that popular items will get wiped out by day 1 afternoon so do plan your time accordingly if you want to get something from there.
STGCC will also see the return of Artist Alley again where you can discover an amazing showcase of the work of both professional and amateur artists. Regular names such as Rachta Lin will be setting up shop there so this is one place not to be missed. Just remember to have cash on hand, and if you don’t there is no worries as STGCC is held at the Marina Bay Sands so you can be sure there will be lots of ATMs around.
