The new year is upon us and as the POPCulture Online team is gearing up to once again bring you coverage of the year’s events. In this article, POPCulture Online’s Kenneth Wong shares with you some of the events in 2012 to look out for based on the information that has been released so far and also trends from previous years.
Cosfest X.2 & Cosfest XI
Stage action from Cosfest X.1 Day 2
The first event to look out for in 2012 will be part 2 of Cosfest X which was held in June 2011. Cosfest has always been the biggest cosplay event to attend in Singapore and even though Cosfest X.2 will be more of a sequel to the main event, expect the grounds to be filled with cosplayers still.
Cosfest X.2 will also see the selection round for 2012’s World Cosplay Summit(WCS) which will be held in August 2012 in Nagoya, Japan. WCS has always been one of the most prestigious cosplay competitions in the world and no doubt a great honor to be there to represent your country. Looking back at previous year’s entries for the selection round here in Singapore, do expect an even higher standard this year.
Cofest X.2 will take place on 25th & 26th February 2012 at Downtown East and admission is free as with the previous Cosfest events.
Not much information has been release to date for Cosfest XI other than it will be titled “Go For It!” and will take place on the 7th & 8th of July. The venue is expected to be back at Downtown East with free admission as with all over Cosfest events.
Tom Hanks at the Media Conference for Larry Crowne, ScreenSingapore 2011
The inaugural ScreenSingapore 2011 drew to a close on 12th June with the announcement that the hybrid cinema event will be back again in June 2012 to the delight of movie fans here in Singapore. While the event is one more for trade partners in a move to make Singapore the gateway to both East and West movie makers, movie lovers should also look out for it as it means movie premieres and stars gracing the sunny island of Singapore.
2011 saw stars such as Tom Hanks, Zhang ZiYi and Byung-hun Lee walking the red carpet at Lido for the Asia-Pacific Premiere of Larry Crowne. Not forgetting the Japanese popculture fans where the International premiere of Paradise Kiss and May’n THE MOVIE – Phonic Nation at The Cathay.
While not much details have been release yet, looking at the success and turn out of 2011’s ScreenSingapore, do expect to see even more stars and A-List movies making their way to ScreenSingapore 2012.
Singapore Toys Games & Comics Convention 2012
Meeting C.B.Cebulski at STGCC 2011
Probaby one of the biggest surprises in 2011 for popculture events goers was the Singapore Toys Games & Comics Convention (STGCC). From the structure of the program to even a more focused direction, STGCC transformed from your standard mix and match (or rojack in local terms) event to one whose focus is aligned with its counterpart in the western popculture world.
While still a bit rough around the edges, it was a big improvement from the previous years and the capture of the Hot Toys exhibition booth & event exclusives ensured a huge crowd was seen lining up outside Suntec as early as 6am. Popular Japanese cosplayer Kipi helped to add the Asian favor while comic favorites C.B.Cebulski & Paul Levitz rounded up the high profile guest list.
STGCC will be back in 2012 on the 1st & 2nd of September and will now be held at the posh Marina Bay Sands. This is again another surprising news as not only does this mean an “up level” in terms of class for the event but also has got lots of speculations and rumors going on the internet. Would this means an even bigger scale event & does this mean a super star will be coming are a few to name.
With both The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers opening in 2012, one can only wonder how this will play a part in an event whose main exhibitors from 2011’s event include comic powerhouses, Marvel and DC Comics.
Shakira performing at the Padang Stage, SingaporeGP 2011
2012 will be the fifth year the SingaporeGP will be held as the world’s first F1 night race in the heart of the City hall area. Now you might be wondering why is a sporting event in the list of popular culture events to look out for in 2012.
The answer lies with not the only the sport but in the event as a whole. Each year, the City Hall area is transformed into one big carnival with many performances all around the area. From the waterfront stage at the Esplanade to the main stage at the Padang, the SingaporeGP has seen many international artiste take to the stage. Best part is that you only need to purchase the normal walk about tickets to gain access to these concerts.
2010 saw the likes of Adam Lambert and Daughtry perform at the main stage plus the diva herself, Mariah Carey closing the event with a performance to remember. 2011 saw the likes of retro favorite Rick Astley perform at the Esplanade waterfront stage, Shakira made her maiden performance in Singapore at the main stage on day 2 with award winning Linkin Park closing 2011’s SingaporeGP by rocking to a fully packed Padang.
The SingaporeGP 2012 dates have already been confirmed at 21st-23rd September 2012 with early bird tickets already open. There is not much news on who will be coming to perform yet but seeing how each year has big names coming in, this is one event to follow.
Anime Festival Asia 2012
FLOW performing at AFA11:I Love Anisong
The biggest Japanese popculture event this side of the region, Anime Festival Asia can be said to have achieved a “household name” status among Japanese popculture fans here. AFA 2011 was a success with over 80,000 visitors with a list of guest that made many fans drool, one can only wonder how the organisers are going to top that for AFA 2012.
From bringing in one of the most accomplished seiyuus(voice action), Chiwa Saitou who voiced the unforgettable Akemi Homura in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime to one of the most popular Anisong group, Kalafina and even the people behind the highly emotional Anohana anime, this is as big as it gets as many have commented.
As of date, there hasn’t been any news on Anime Festival Asia 2012 other than the usual stuff that it will be back at Suntec in November 2012 thanks to the huge board outside AFA 2011’s event hall which says “See You In 2012”.
But with the trend of each year’s Anime Festival Asia topping the previous year’s in both size and guest list, the online community has been active with lots of wishlist and hope of an even bigger AFA in2012. Add to the fact that an AFA Shop Sign has been teased on AFA’s official Facebook page in recent days, 2012 looks to be an interesting year for AFA.
A New Year of Events to Look Forward to
Now of course, the POPCulture Online Team doesn’t own a crystal ball that I can borrow to see into the future so we can’t give you absolute details on all of the events. We also did not mention some of the other events like JPLEX, EOY 2012, L2P or TGX as there is no date to the event yet or a confirmed venue especially with the EOY organisers commenting that there might be a change of venue.
But rather what we want to do in this article is to whet your appetite for a year of events to look forward to. 2011 has been a very interesting year with many new exciting events popping up and regular ones going the notch higher and the feel for 2012 is that these events will look to build upon that.
One thing for sure that I can say is that the POPCulture Online Team will continue to do our best to provide you, our readers, with quality coverage articles that we have been doing in our first year.
After all, there is nothing more rewarding to us than to share our experiences at these events with everyone!
