Celebrating 75 Years of Batman

That cape, that mask, all the cool gadgets and not forgetting that ride, make no mistake when it comes to one of the most loved superhero of all time – Batman. From the early comics to cartoons and not forgetting the many memorable movies, Batman has continue to trill fans all over the world and this year marks the 75th year of the cape crusader.

And to celebrate 75 years of Batman, both Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) and DC Entertainment together with Pacific Licensing Studio (PLS), WBCP’s licensing representative for South-East Asia, have planned an exhilarating line-up of exciting activities from April to July this year for Singapore set to dazzle the crowd, including consumer events, new merchandise launches and eye-popping retail programmes. Kicking things off at The Highlander Bar & Restaurant with a special Batman theme, members of the media, partners and friends were invited to the press launch where details of what’s in stored for fans of Batman.

Starting off with a mobile app by the people at Right Here Media, the Bat-Signal could be seen flashing on everyone’s phone followed by a little click as many times as you can game to defeat a random villain from the Batman universe. Smart and interesting way to catch everyone’s attention if you ask me.

Following the little mobile interaction, Mr Neal Rudge, Director of PLS came onto stage to share with everyone what to expect as the celebrations of 75 years of Batman kicks off here in Singapore:

  • On 23 April 2014, the DC Comics Super Heroes retail stores will launch their 5th store in Orchard Gateway, as well as re-open their newly revamped store in Vivocity!  The outlets will showcase an exclusive limited-edition range of products to celebrate the Caped Crusader’s 75th anniversary.
  • From 31 May 2014 to 31 March 2015, fans will get to ‘fly’ with Batman and other DC Comics Super Heroes onboard Singapore Cable Car through in-cabin augmented reality and thematically wrapped cabins. Other exciting themed activities include photo opportunities with 3-D life-sized statues of the Super Heroes, exclusive retail merchandises as well as interactive media experience.”
  • From 3 June to 31 August 2014, die-hard followers can spend quality time at the Singapore Philatelic Museum: The League Against Evil, A DC Comics Super Heroes Exhibition, featuring Batman and Justice League collectibles and figurines!
  • From 3 June, Batman enthusiasts can collect the limited edition DC Justice League & Batman 75th Anniversary MyStamp Collection by Singapore Post Limited (SingPost).  The stamp collection features 75 pieces of comic cover over 75 years of Batman and the legendary Super Heroes from the Justice League. It will be sold in a bundle set of 2 books: Batman and Justice League, at S$89.90.

In December, fans and cosplayers can commemorate the anniversary and party up in full glory by participating in the Heroes and Villains of Gotham City cosplay event at a secret location (the location will be disclosed at a later date).

But of course, what is a Batman event without the cape crusader making an appearance himself and to the trill of everyone present, Batman makes an appearance as well. While I am sure many were hoping against logic that it would be Bale in that batsuit, I gotta give it to the guy insde for being big enough to send any baddies flying with one punch thanks to those biceps. Oh and I had to take a second look at that chin which almost seemed comic accurate like.

Not to mention the great food that night which definitely attracted many for 2nd helpings including both POPCulture Online’s founders.  Oh and Batcakes too thanks to Bengawan Solo which completed the whole Batman themed event.

I am sure I am not the only Batman fan out there excited about all these events lined up for the year. I’m definitely going to see what else I can add to my display cabinet at home with all those collectables that will make my wallet cry. Not forgetting the cosplay event by Movie Mania in december which is marked down on my list, a Batmobile Hologram Exhibition and the first CGI-animated Batman series called “Beware The Batman”, it looks to be a very exciting year of the Batman!
