Pan-Asian group, Blush comprising of five girls from different Asian countries – Angeli Flores from the Philippines, Natsuko Danjo from Japan, Alisha Budhrani from India, Victoria Chan from China and Lee Ji-hae from South Korea – were in Singapore in June to promote their new single “Undivided” featuring Snoop Dogg.
The girls look set to take Asia by storm by making their debut performance in Singapore at the inaugural Men’s Fashion Week finale party in April and they were thrilled to return to Singapore for an intimate “live” media showcase at TAB.
“Undivided”, released by FarWest Entertainment, was recorded at Avon Studios in Hong Kong with Steve Schnur (Grammy Foundation Chair Emeritus) and Darrell Brown as co-producers. Snoop Dogg, Lindy Robbins, Jess Cates and Reed Vertelney are the quartet of acclaimed songwriters who composed the track.
POPCulture Online had a chance to chat with the girls as we got to know them a little more and found out how it was like for them to work with Snoop Dogg
The Blush Girls (from left to right)
Angeli Flores, 21, Filipino
Angeli started singing at the age of 8 with her older sister and got her first taste of the spotlight in the Second Grade, where she won a singing competition, beating the 3-year reigning champion. Angeli went on to perform in contests such as Star for a Night where she was a finalist and even became a fan favorite in the TV show Pinoy Idol, taking the #11 spot.
Victoria Chan, 28, Chinese
Victoria has been singing since the day she could string together notes. She was influenced by movies such as Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and could sing Supercalifragilistic-expialidocious by the age of 3, when she also started ballet and tap dancing les- sons, followed by ballroom and Latin dancing later in her life.
Ji Hae Lee, 26, South Korean
Ji Hae started singing after graduating from Hoseo University, where she studied law. She participated in Superstar K, Korea’s largest audition program and placed in the top 30, though she had no formal vocal or dance training till she made it into the Project Lotus academy.
Natsuko Danjo 20, Japanese
Natsuko started dancing at the age of 3 in her mother’s own dance studio. She has performed in two dance showcases each year since she was 6 years old and was involved in numerous dance competitions such as Head Hunter and Gangsta Boogie, placing first numerous times with her dance crew, SpongePants (she is a fan of the TV show Spongebob Squarepants).

POPCulture Online: Tell us more about the band?
BLUSH: Project Lotus, spearheaded by Jon Niermann, CEO of FarWest Entertainment, was the talent search across Asia that led to the formation of Blush. Girls were chosen five countries: China, Japan, Korea, India and the Philippines. They then went into a training academy, from which ten finalists were selected. Project Lotus culminated in the final selection concert last November. The five winning girls, one from each country, are Blush.
POPCulture Online: What was it like opening for Justin Bieber in Hong Kong?
BLUSH: It was an incredible experience and a great honour. We sang three of our original songs, “Make You Blush”, “Fell in Love with a Song” and “Undivided” The audience was really supportive towards us and the atmosphere at the concert hall was so overwhelming and adrenaline-pumping. We enjoyed every minute on stage! In fact, we were asked to open Justin Bieber’s concert in Japan, but we couldn’t, as we had to go to Los Angeles to shoot our music video with Snoop Dogg.
POPCulture Online: You currently work with many Hollywood A-list producers so do tell us about your music
BLUSH: We are so fortunate to be working with world-class songwriters, producers and mixers. Working with them is just awesome and we have learned so much. Blush is International Pop – we take and use influences from Asia and the globe. Our music is a fusion of house/electronic/r&b/funk/rap/hip hop and our music includes all those elements as well as adding a bit of Asian inspiration if it works for the song. Our music is fun and edgy, and we hope it’ll touch people’s hearts.
POPCulture Online: What can audiences expect from you?
BLUSH: A great show! Of course, we think our songs are great but we also work really hard on our dance routines, and they’re a big part of who we are. We want to make people MOVE! But perhaps the thing people will notice first is that there is no one lead singer. We’ve always been clear that every member of Blush is a lead singer in her own right. We think that makes us a bit different and hopefully our audiences will like it.
POPCulture Online: Tell us about your expereience working with a super star like Snoop Dogg?
BLUSH: Our first single, ”Undivided” was co-written by Snoop Dogg who also features on the track. We’ve recently returned from LA where we were shooting our first music video with him. Working with Snoop was just incredible – he is so cool and really tall! Although he is a Hollywood super star, he was really friendly and even shared his love for Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles with us, – he bought some for us to try!
POPCulture Online: What are the group’s plans for the rest of the year?
BLUSH: In a couple of weeks we’re off to Los Angeles again, this time to promote our single “Undivided” which you can download for free via our website or listen to on our facebook page. We will be staying in the USA for a couple of months, during which we’ll give a showcase performance on one of the top TV shows in America "So you think you can dance" in August. We will also perform at Nisei Week Japanese Festival in August and at the Girl Scout Convention at the end of October. However we will not forget Asia, as it is our home, and we will shuttle between Asia and USA whenever there are performance opportunities to get closer to our fans.
