Begin Again Review

A movie about recovering from heartache, being down and out and most importantly a movie about music. This was always going to catch my attention and of course good reason for many females to catch it as well because Adam Levine from Maroon 5 is in it.

For the guys, Keira Knightley….need I say more. I feel like I really don’t need to tell you my verdict of this film because the cast is just so charming in it’s own unique way and that alone really should be enough reason to watch it. Just take a look at the trailer below and if you’re not convinced then read on.

The Plot

The latest film from writer-director John Carney (Once), Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label.

But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City. Begin Again is produced and financed by Exclusive Media and produced by Anthony Bregman, Tobin Armbrust and Judd Apatow.

The Verdict

Recording music around the streets of New York, how romantic is that. I love the idea and to see Keira Knightley’s character grow together with this half drunk Mark Ruffalo music producer is so inspiring. As a producer myself, I could just imagine how Dan could imagine musical instruments and arrangements happening all around the raw music he heard. Yes I know it’s somewhat predictable but it is the magic of the business isn’t it.

The recordings, the writing, the performing, those are all the fun parts and it is fully explored. I must say that while some harshness of the industry was talked about, not all of it was entirely accurate but I suppose that’s not what this movie is about. It’s supposed to be sweet, it’s supposed to make you smile so please do not fight it when you watch it.

Hey and if you have enough courage, you should go watch this movie with someone who is as passionate about life and work like you. Not obsessed, passionate, open to ideas, open to dream. I think it’s when you’re with like minded company that you’d really enjoy this film. Because you know when you dream, that’s where the magic happens. Plus you know if she’s as passionate as you then some other magic might happen…..hint hint
