Battleship Reviewed

Before I get into it, I just want to say that I really didn’t expect much from this film but I’m grateful I went to see it because it was good. It’s got a slight Independence Day (ID4) feel to it and it works well.

Let’s break it down a little and see if it’s really worth the rating given.

The Plot

Peter Berg produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force.

Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane

The Verdict

I gotta say I was told that the first half hour was going to be quite slow but when I watched it I felt it was pretty ok. Yeah it did take a while before the action began but there was a decent about of humor throughout to make up for it. Taylor Kitsch does well as the lead who is a bit of a screw up in the Navy. He’s got a hot girlfriend played by Brooklyn Decker however the only problem is her father is an Admiral (Liam Neeson) who isn’t too impressed with his record.

Well that’s pretty much the back story but it’s good enough to lead into the action points of the movie and Taylor’s screw up character has to grow up in order to defeat the aliens. Sounds familiar? Well news flash…it works and that’s what’s important.

Pop star Rihanna makes her big screen debut as a bad ass weapons expert. She’s all attitude in this film and she does it well, standing her ground with the rest of the cast in this movie. It’s a promising start for her acting career.

The visual effects are pretty good and we could tell that from the trailer. Fortunately this movie doesn’t rate or depend heavily on it’s visual effects like some other blockbuster bombs. They play a crucial part in carrying the story but a lot of it takes place on the battleship itself.

There are definitely plot holes but then again what more can you expect from a movie like this. There’s the eye candy factor which is a draw with Brooklyn Decker filling out that role. The acting is very decent as well….you know basically what I’m saying is that this movie was a pleasant surprise. No doubt it was a little loud at times but hey it was good to hear the rifts of ACDC accompanying some of the scenes.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

You know what, go catch the movie. It’s pretty good and it not, the girls can go for Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgård. The men? Well just look at that photo of Brooklyn Decker and tell me you’re not already planning to see it tonight. Haha!
