angela: The Evolution of Style

Japanese pop band angela is best known for theme songs of anime television shows. Their signature upbeat tunes and rich arrangements is a dazzling mix of electronica, dance, rock, swing jazz and ska. angela’s energetic stage presence and stunning performance brings together atsuko’s versatile vocals and KATSU’s multi-instrumental skills, instantly winning the hearts of audiences in big scale international events like Otakon and Sakura-Con.

No stranger to the Oricon Chart, they’ve enjoyed great success with a string of hits for countless anime titles. POPCulture Online speaks to atsuko and KATSU on their success and the inspiration for their style.

POPCulture Online: The first thing most people notice about the two of you are the outfits you wear on stage. Tell us where the influence is from?

atsuko: I want to show a difference between ordinary and not so ordinary life when I’m on stage, that’s why I dress in more gorgeous, brilliant costumes. When I’m on stage, people are surprised and they can such brilliance from the outfits.

KATSU: The costumes are also based on the concepts of the songs we sing.

POPCulture Online: Tell us about the origins of the band?

atsuko: We both grew up in Okayama prefecture in Japan and we were both in the same year and age, however we were both in different bands.

KATSU: We actually made our debut in music playing on the street.

POPCulture Online: Tell us about your music influences and your favorite kinds of music?

atsuko: I love 80s American pop music such as Madonna and Michael Jackson and they were one of the main reasons why I wanted to be a musician. Today I am a musician and I’m so happy that I can achieve this. The good thing about music is that when people like the music, they have even more fun and that’s really something I like to see.

KATSU: I would say my main music influence is from Hard Rock music and I learnt a lot from there. I used that influence to translate into the anime music that I play today. So Hard Rock really played a big part in my music style.

POPCulture Online: What do you both do to unwind?

atsuko: I love Scuba diving. I’ve actually been overseas to Scuba dive but I’m so busy so most of the time I settle for shopping or cooking. Good cooked food makes people happy so I’m pretty good at that! Haha!

KATSU: I’m simple, I love Gunpla and swimming! Haha!

POPCulture Online: What are the groups’ plans for 2012?

atsuko: This year we’ve done many live  performances and events including releasing 2 albums. In 2012, we want to do something we’ve never done before. For me I would really like to do a live show with only ballads.

POPCulture Online: KATSU-san, how long does it take for you to do your hair?

KATSU: Hahaha hmm about 1 hour! Hahaha!
