“Defense! Defense!” Those were the deafening cheers from Singapore fans at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.
The event – Singapore vs Indonesia in the first of the round robin matches for water polo. It’s quite an experience to be in the middle of all these Singaporean fans at 1.30 in the afternoon. I know for sure that there were office workers who were on leave and the buld of the fans were parents who brought their kids to the event during the school holidays.
Good on you parents, our future generation might not get to experience this for another 20 years or so.
“Let’s go Singapore, Let’s go” and I turn to see one of the parents leading the cheer. Now at this point I’m thinking… this is the Singapore spirit. But really it’s more of a combination of things.
You see Indonesia was clawing their way back. Slowly narrowing the lead. Most crowds would start to quiet down. No, not us. We got louder. Hey this is a defending SEA Games gold medalist. Of course they got this. And just like a dance, the water polo girls responded to our tune from the stand.
Singapore eventually won the match 7-4. With our goalie making 2 penalty saves that inspired the crowd. But having gone for so many days of competition, from Netball to Boxing and now of course the Water polo competition has started (one of my favourite sports), it’s really something else to see this much support from our local fans.
As I’m writing this, the medal tally puts us at 52 gold medals. Well by next Tuesday (16th June) perhaps we’ll see 70? I certainly hope so and I’ll say, I was there when it happened.
