If there is one place to be this festive December period to soak in the Christmas atmosphere, Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay is the place to be. Open from the 1st December till Boxing day, this is the closest you will get to Christmas in sunny Singapore. Kenneth Wong braves the “people mountain people sea” to share the five things to do to enhance your experience there.
Eat, Drink and Be Merry
This year’s Christmas Wonderland sees Savour setting up shop at the meadow section which features celebrity chefs from award-winning and Michelin-starred restaurants at their Gourmet Village. Those looking for a nice glass of wine to complete their meal can also head over to the Finest Wine market.
For those who prefer something more bite sized, the festive market area also has yummy food ranging from nachos to meatballs and even quail eggs to munch while you take a stroll through the 57,000sqm Christmas festival ground.
The Circus Comes to Town
The highly-acclaimed Circus Abyssinia from Ethiopia makes its Asian premiere with gravity-defying stunts and astounding acrobatics. Don’t be fooled by the “small” stage as that’s all these amazing people need. A 45 minutes show that will wow both adults and children, do purchase your tickets fast as they sell out quick.
The Circus Abyssinia Present Ethiopian Dreams will be performed at The Meadow on Tuesdays to Sundays and on Christmas Day. Quick Tip: do the Singaporean thing and be kaisu early before your slot to get the better viewing seats.
Soak in the Festive Music
No Christmas is complete without the festive music to set the mood. Enjoy traditional Christmas songs and soak in the festive music with more than 10 local school choirs and choral groups. There will also be Yuletide sessions every weekend and on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Best thing is there is this nice lawn for you to chill, relax and soak in the festive music.
Blizzard Time at the Spalliera
It is a known fact that we do not get snow here in sunny Singapore. Even though the December weather is cool and rainy (remember to bring your umbrellas or raincoats just in case!), there is nothing like a little snow to complete the whole package. While the “snow” here isn’t the same as what you get in winter countries, its close enough to make a great Instagram moment or just let your kids have some fun. Just remember to watch them close as it will get very, very, and I do mean very crowded. Blizzard Time happens from 1 to 26 Dec 2017 at 6:50pm, 7:55pm, 8:55pm, 10:00pm, 10:30pm daily
Quick Tip: the special Christmas version of the Garden Rhapsody happens at 7:45pm and 8:45pm which is just before Blizzard Time at 7:55pm 8:55pm so head over to Spalliera for Blizzard time and hang around for the Garden Phapsody.
Go Shutter Happy
Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay is the perfect time to bring your smartphones with fancy cameras, compact cameras, mirrorless cameras and DSLRS. From Christmas decorations at Santa’s Grotto and of course a picture with jolly old Santa Claus to the magnificent luminaries and even at the skating ring. This is the time to add photos to your social media to welcome the last month of the year.
The Luminarie – sculptures of light, a mainstay of the event, will feature 80 handcrafted light sculptures with brand new designs at this year’s Christmas Wonderland. For the first time, the event will feature a 13m tall Christmas ‘tree’ as well as the tallest luminarie in Southeast Asia, the Spalliera. So prepare your widest lens or learn how to activate that panorama function on your handphone as these structures are huge and might not fit your standard frame. Just remember safety first and don’t climb or enter areas you are not supposed to.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year
Here in Singapore, we will probably never get the same Christmas atmosphere as countries with the winter season. But thanks to Blue Sky Events, we can get the next best thing with this 57,000sqm Christmas festival ground.
The fourth edition of Christmas Wonderland, Singapore’s biggest annual yuletide fair, welcomes all visitors from today till 26 December, from 4pm to 11pm daily at Gardens by the Bay.
