In less than a week’s time, otakus in Singapore will unite in Suntec Convention Centre for their annual pilgrimage of all things J-Culture. After all, C3 Anime Festival Asia Singapore, or C3AFASG19 for short, is the reigning Japanese Pop Culture event in Southeast Asia, with close to 30 festivals in the past decade in Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan.
Being a home-grown festival, the Singapore edition is always a show-stopper – we have seen many Japanese artistes make their regional debut here, blockbuster premieres and exclusive merchandise here first. Last year’s edition in Singapore drew over 105,000 visitors, and fans were treated to a glamorous red carpet walk graced by their favourite anisong artistes and celebrity cosplayers.
This year’s edition promises to be a “passport” to all things J-culture. So whether you’re a regular (get your wallets ready and powerbanks full), or curious to brave the crowds and dive into the extensive festival grounds (that means the whole level 4 and more), here are 5 reasons why it’s going to be the coolest hang-out place in town this weekend:
AFA Film Festival
Held for the very first time, seven screenings will be held, from CENCOROLL CONNECT, Saekano the Movie Finale, to ZOMBIE LAND SAGA LIVE and a Frame Arms Girl movie.
Do take note that as the film festival is held outside the festival grounds, separate tickets will be needed to be purchased: https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/c3afasg19-afa-film-festival-tickets-76220632965
Admire Power Cosplayers in Town
What is an anime event without the cosplayers, both from the local community and from around the region. Get your camera’s ready as the cosplayers (from previous C3AFASG experience) can be found both in and outside the festival grounds.
C3AFASG19 will also see celebrity cosplayers come down for the event so do check out their schedule if you plan on catching them at the event.
This will also be the last chance to see the very popular Baozi & Hana, as they will be making their final cosplay appearance. The duo first made their cosplay debut at C3AFA Singapore as well so it’s going to be a lot of feels for them to bid farewell to their fans here.
Pro Tip: these celebrity cosplayers can also be sometimes found walking around the festival grounds so do keep your eyes open!
Sing along to Anisong Concerts
The I Love Anisong Concerts are literally one of the biggest highlights of C3AFASG. Each year, the concert halls are packed with super powered light stick-wielding fans singing away to their favourite anime songs, with the anisong stars. Again this year, be treated to powerful performances by artistes who are making their debut performances in Singapore, as well as some regular favourites. To watch out for – the special collaboration on 1 Dec by Ayaka Ohashi, Azusa Tadokoro, May’n and Minori Chihara.
PLAY it your way – Analog or Digital
With gaming and esports trending these few years, it’s nice to see that C3AFASG has curated a dedicated zone for gamers who are also anime lovers as well. Bring out the inner ninja skills in you at the Naruto-themed escape room, watch illustrators battle it out at Art Duel, or try the AFA PLAY Stage exclusive – King of the Hill Challenge.
The AFA PLAY Stage will also be presenting an exclusive showdown between the producer of Fate/Grand Order Duel – Mr Konaka, and Singapore’s GRAND COSMOS WAR Tournament Champion! https://www.facebook.com/animefestivalasia/posts/10156425474101022?__tn__=-R
Nom Nom Nom
Serious fandom can be a seriously energy-expending affair – and the Food Street is something that is always very welcome for refuelling without missing anything in the halls. Fans will be happy to note that the Food Street has expanded this year, with everything from ramen to the yummy Tiger Sugar bubble tea (not japanese, but not complaining).
Ladies who fancy some pampering can check out Swallowtail Cafe, one of Japan’s most famous butler cafe experience.
With six exhibition halls of content, performances and surprises, it’s going to be an exciting edition to enjoy, and the anime event of the year for all fans. C3AFASG19 will be held at Suntec Convention Centre from 29 November to 1 December. Tickets can be bought here.
