From humble beginnings to performing at the sold out stadiums in Japans, Japanese duo Yujin Kitagawa and Koji Iwasawa of YUZU (ゆず) has done it all. Kicking off their YUZU ASIA TOUR 2016 Summer NATSUIRO here in Singapore, the duo brought the house down over at *SCAPE The Ground Theatre with their infectiously positive high stage energy and their catchy tunes.
Never at one moment did the two of them stop entertaining everyone in the audience with their witty engagement and you got to give plus points to Yujin Kitagawa for not only speaking in English but also picking up some common Singlish phrases like “Don’t like that lah” to the delight of the audience. Performing their hearts out for the audience, it was a non-stop concert with only short almost un-noticeable breaks for costume changes which included an interesting segment introducing the “Japanese Citron Monkey” which can be seen on the tour emblem and an interesting play on the duo’s band name.
Yet even with their huge success back in Japan, there was just no sign of that “Success Aura” on stage and even during the meet and greet with members of the media. Truly there on stage are two performers who remembered their humble beginnings of performing on the streets before their big break with their debut single “NATSUIRO” which the tour is aptly named after.
In fact my tummy stopped reminding me that I didn’t have my dinner yet rushing down from another event as the duo played their hearts out into the Saturday night. Playing hits like Towa which was my favourite for the night to the hilariously entertaining OLA!! (mexican inspired flags and outfit included) which was the main theme song for the theatrical anime “Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack!” Part of me couldn’t help but wonder if the duo were having more fun on stage than their audience below.
Even though photography isn’t usually allowed at other Japanese concerts, it was surprising that they allowed it with camera phones. Yet instead of getting a sea of screen lights as experienced at other concerts, here from my platfrom at the soundboard, I see fans, towels, waving hands and claps throughout. Sure there were moments initially but as the concert went on, it was certain the audience was too busy enjoying themselves for that.
In a special message for their YUZU ASIA TOUR 2016 Summer NATSUIRO, Yujin Kitagawa and Koji Iwasawa shared that they want to play in Asia and hope that the concerts would be a good introduction to all our fans seeing them for the first time. Well they definitely left with a good impression from their first concert in Singapore, not only with their existing fans but also for new fans watching them live for the first time.
Let’s hope they will be back again and this time I will remember to bring my muscle rub especially for such a high energy concert.
