This month, Elliott Danker speaks to YouTube singing sensation Marie Digby who recently released her 4th studio album titled, Your Love. We ask her about her latest album, working in Manila and Jam for Japan.
POPCulture Online: Tell us about your new album – Your Love and how is it different from the other albums?
MARIE DIGBY: Your Love is the sweetest album I’ve made so far. I wanted to create a collection of songs which made people want to fall in love, something that could brighten your mood on a down day. I had the chance to collaborate with some good friends of mine from the Philippines as well.
POPCulture Online: What’s the inspiration behind this album?
MARIE DIGBY: The inspiration for this album might sound a little unexpected but the year 2010 was a difficult one for me, full of illness and losses. So in turn, I wanted to explore brighter topics and sounds to capture the happier moments in life.
POPCulture Online: You were working on your album in Manila for the second half of last year. What was the experience like?
MARIE DIGBY: I had the chance to live in Manila for 9 months last year. It was my first time living in a foreign country but now it’s become one of my homes. Ever since my first visit to The Philippines, I always felt a special connection and welcomed by everyone there. It was truly a special experience to immerse myself in Filipino culture, to make great new friends, and to spend quality time with my fans in the Philippines.
POPCulture Online: You were also part of Jam for Japan Manila, what was that like for you sharing the stage with so many fellow musicians doing their bit for charity?
MARIE DIGBY: Being of part of Jam for Japan was very emotional and special for me. I participated in that event very shortly after flying in from Japan and having experienced the earthquake. I was looking for ways in which I could reach out and help my country and it was such a proud moment to be sharing the stage with so many other musicians who wanted to aid in the recovery. I think it’s the first time I cried on stage.
POPCulture Online: Back in 2010 you did a 17-episode web mini-series called Breathing Underwater. Would you consider doing another one something soon or perhaps something on the big screen?
MARIE DIGBY: Making the Breathing Underwater series was very stressful and chaotic but also a unique experience. I’d definitely consider doing another one for a future album. I saw it more as a very long music video cut up into episodes. I haven’t done a whole lot of acting but as they say, if the right role were to come along, I’d love to challenge myself with that one day.
POPCulture Online: Would you ever consider releasing a full Japanese album one day?
MARIE DIGBY: l will actually be releasing a full Japanese album sometime soon! I am finishing up a contract now with a company in Japan, I’ll have a big show in Tokyo on June 12th to start the project. Although it’ll be for the Japanese market, I’m sure that the songs lyrics will be a mix of Japanese and English.
POPCulture Online: Lastly, what are your plans for the rest of 2012?
MARIE DIGBY: My plans this year are to release an independent album from the States, start my next project in Japan, and to continue the promotions for Your Love in Asia. As long as I am making new music, I am forever a happy girl. I also love to travel so I’m hoping to visit Dublin and Prague this year with my family for a bit of vacation!
Your Love is out now in all music stores and it reviewed in this month’s issue of POPCulture Online
